Eighth of an Acre Bounty

Random thoughts and anecdotes on cooking, critters, gardening and life on our small city lot.

About Me

I live in Seattle. I like to cook, garden, grow food, and commune with my critters. I work-but would rather not (at least not for someone else). Lately I’ve become more and more obsessed with trying to eek out every ounce of self-sufficiency from our little home and square of dirt that I can. So far so good.

I dream about land in the country but really do like being able to go to a show in the city without a 2 hour drive. I’m conflicted. I like smart people who have a passion for something and am finding they are increasingly rare. I’m an atheist and at heart an anarchist - but I will still get fired up about the state of politics and our country.

This blog is mostly about cataloging our life here. Recording the garden goings on, meals cooked and animal antics. But it is also occasionally political, because I don’t think you can cordon life off into personal/political spheres. It is all intertwined and if you don’t see the connections, then you’re not thinking hard enough.

Maya, loved your garden photos, animals, etc.,and reading Gary’s blog. I guess Fez isn’t the only one Huxley doesn’t like around his mistress. John’s visit this week was much enjoyed and appreciated, he got me on your web page. Will check it out periodically to see the new and unusual. Love, Gran’ma

Hello! I enjoy your blog, and I am the social media contact for a grass fed beef company from Montana. I’d love see if you’re interested in sampling the beef in exchange for a writeup on your blog… The beef is delicious and really flavorful. More information at http://www.lacensebeef.com

I’m so glad I came across your blog! I found it through Eat Local Challenge’s “Eating Locally at Thanksgiving” post, what a great find!

I’m a recent transplant to Seattle myself, I’ve only been here for a little over a year. But I am continually impressed by the passion Seattleites have for everything local!

It inspired me to start my own locavore retail shop, The General Store Seattle. We’re devoted exclusively to US-made products with a focus on the Pacific Northwest - 85% of the products come from Washington, 10% from Oregon, and 1% each from Utah and Montana.

I personally try to buy everything locally, but I just got tired of spending hours upon hours researching products. So I decided to put it all under one roof - bath products, food, beverage, clothing, accessories, household items, and gifts.

I would love to invite you to our upcoming Ugly Sweater Weekend on the 20th & 21st. We’re giving away free Cupcake Royale cupcakes and all customers wearing their tackiest holiday wear will get 15% off their purchases!
